How did you first experience wind and what is your understanding of it?

Since young, i found it strange that i did not know how to burp (even till now) but instead release gases through farting. Bloatedness was an issue and knowing i could not burp, meant that i had a lot of trapped air (that was not good for me) in my body unless i release it. Got curious when my family used a coin to scratch the back and if the mark is very red, means that is a lot of wind in body. and then they will burp and feel better.

Who told you about wind?

Mum, grandmother, tukang urut (masseuse)

Do you believe in it? (Why or why not?)

Yes, I may not see it but i can feel the effects on my body.

What are some ailments you have that may be caused by wind?

bloatedness, digestion, discomfort, muscle ache

What are the daily rituals you practice on your own for health and wellness?

avoid carbonated drinks, drinking a warm cup of ginger tea helps with bloatedness. sometimes it’s bad that i put vicks on my stomach and next thing you know i’ll be farting all the air out. farting is such an important thing in my life given that i dont really know how to burp. no airconditioning at home. minimise meat intake or not gorge down food quickly. started actively practising yoga and learning more about vayus which helps with my basic understanding of wind.

When did you start practising these rituals in your routine?

2013

How did you learn of these rituals?

habits from old folks. through learning more about ayurverda. certain postures help with releasing flatulence, while other mindful postures help with the movement of good wind/vayu in your body. it’s still a learning process as it is hard to grasp something that you do not see, but feel and see it’s manifestation in our physical body, mental thoughts and even emotions.

Do you think health and wellness is something that you should spend a lot on for it to be effective?

No

Why so?

a lot of learning can be done from older generation that has used methods such as scrapping with a coin, omitting certain things from diet to overcome flatulence etc. knowledge helps with our understanding of these habits. e.g. squatting (even in yoga known as malasana) helps with elimination, how we struggle to defecate in a sitting position as compared to squatting. however, it is important to note the accessibility of this knowledge and understanding. changing of lifestyle whether its signing up for classes, changing once diet or getting a tukang urut (masseus) may require some money. hence, we overcome this wind/angin in different ways to each individual.
